Calculator FAQs
Everything you need to know about using our free mortgage planning tools.
How accurate are these mortgage calculators?
Our calculators provide indicative estimates based on the figures you enter. They use standard amortisation formulas and current market rate assumptions, so results are a solid starting point for planning — but not a formal quote or pre-approval. For exact figures tailored to your situation, speak with an AML Home Loans adviser.
What interest rate should I enter into the calculators?
We recommend using the current advertised rates from your preferred bank as a baseline, or asking an AML adviser for the best rate you're likely to qualify for. It's also worth stress-testing your repayments at a rate 1–2% higher to make sure you're comfortable if rates rise.
Do weekly or fortnightly repayments actually save me money?
Yes — making fortnightly repayments means you make the equivalent of one extra monthly payment per year, which chips away at your principal faster and reduces the total interest you pay over the life of the loan. The Repayment Calculator lets you compare all three frequencies side by side.
Can I use these calculators for an investment property or refinance?
Absolutely. All five calculators work for any residential mortgage scenario — first home, investment property, or refinance. Just enter the figures that match your situation. The Refinance Savings calculator is specifically designed to show how much switching to a lower rate could save you.
Will using a calculator affect my credit score?
No. Our calculators are entirely anonymous planning tools — no personal information is collected or submitted, and no credit inquiry is made. Your credit score is only affected when a lender formally checks your credit report as part of a loan application.
How much deposit do I need to buy a home in New Zealand?
Most lenders require a minimum 20% deposit for existing properties, though some first-home buyer schemes allow as little as 5–10% with KiwiSaver contributions or a Welcome Home Loan. The Deposit Planner calculator helps you map out how long it will take to reach your target and how much KiwiSaver you can use.
